4 Helpful Tips for Choosing the Right Fishing Gear
Whether you’ve recently developed love for fishing or are already a fishing pro, you’ll agree that to become a good angler, your need excellent fishing gear and you should know how to choose it. No matter which fish you want to catch and where you want to do it, some basic rules apply commonly to choosing good fishing gear. Here are a few of them.
1. Right Size
First rule to remember is that you should think of the size of the fish you want to catch and choose your fishing gear according to its size. Don’t assume that the rod and reel you’ve bought will be useful for all types of fish. For example, your beloved 12-pound-class casting reel you use for bass is just useless for tossing the tiny spinners and jigs for catching black crappie, because it’s too heavy, whereas the 4-pound-class superlight reel that’s perfect for casting micro-jigs to catch those crappie are not helpful to handle a big largemouth bass. Even medium-sized gear won’t work for either of these species. Rather than trying to manage with single gear, buy gear that’s properly sized for the fish you’re going to target. An excellent online fishing shop like Fish Lovers Guide will help you do that.
2. Colors of Fishing Lures
A general rule of thumb is to use lures of colors that match the color of water you’re fishing. It’s not sure which color lures the fish will love on any specific day and hence it’s ideal to keep changing color when you’re not catching. But to start with, you should choose the color which matches that of the water. Here are a few suggestions:
- In tannic-stained water, root-beer is usually the best pick.
- For clear water, choose pearl or white color lure.
- When the water is green, chartreuse or lime is often proves to be productive.
3. Fishing Line
You may easily be daunted with the countless brands and types of fishing line available on the market. In general, remember that monofilament line is less sensitive and it stretches a little and hence it’s perfect when fish are nibbling on baits, whereas braid lines are highly sensitive and have an excellent hook-setting power, so are perfect for fishing with lures.
4. Sharp Hooks
Make sure your hooks are always sharp. So, use either new hooks or sharpen your old ones. This may seem obvious. However, it’s surprising that most anglers go fishing with their old, dull hooks. With such hooks, they may catch a few fish. But if their hooks are new or old but sharpened, they will certainly have a much larger catch.
Follow these rules and they will take you on the journey of becoming an expert angler. All the best!
