Fly Fishing Tips and Tricks

Are you beginner to fly fishing but want to become a pro? You need to know the basics of fly fishing so that you can become an expert in fly fishing for bass, walleye, trout and many other games and trophies. Here are some basic fly fishing rules.
Find Foam
Foam is perhaps the best friend of a fly fisher because its line tells you a couple of important things; firstly, it tells the position of the main flow lines or current seams. If the flow is moving the foam along, you can be sure about it is moving food items. So, golden rule is to fish the ledges, the edges and the foam.
Secondly, the foam line also tells you how your drift is – good or bad. You can find major drag issues, but not the minor ones. They can be found by watching the foam. If the fly is moving slower or faster than the foam, there is a drag issue. The more different the floating speeds, he greater will be the drag issue.
Work on the Fly
Take some time to work on the fly after each time you miss or catch fish. Check if the hackle is damaged or the wing/s have twisted out of position. Use a drying pad and dry the fly. If you are able to track either of them, use either of them after every fish.
Learn about Grip, Reel, Rod and Knots
Grip: Fly fishing pros recommend to have the crank of the reel which is used by the left hand, unless you are a left-hander. This is because while playing and landing a fish, your strongest hand should be used and you shouldn’t have to change hands in the middle of the battle.
Reel: Learn how to take it to side, change spools fast and comfortably. Ensure that the inner side of every spool is marked denoting what every line is, including spares. It’s also important to know how the drag adjustment works and where it is.
Rod: Once you attach the reel, pull some line off, fold the fly line, and walk along the rod with the handle of the reel up and its butt on the ground and pass the folded line through either guide.
Knots: Clinch, improved clinch and surgeons knot are sufficient to start with. You will also get a small booklet on knots with your reel and line.
Your Dress Matters
Ardent fly fishers don’t prefer bright colored clothes or even white hats while fishing because fish can see both of them very well. So, choose earthy and muted colors blending with the nature around. Weather may suddenly change while you are fishing. Wear something in which you are comfortable and you will be successful. You can get shirts having a mesh piece under the back yoke and even in the underarm part – this is ideal for warm weather. Fishing vests are stylish, but not very necessary.
